As part of my ongoing series of Head2Head features in Black and White Photography Magazine, I recently created a group test for the magazine on the best lenses for street photography. My roundup included four optics from Sigma, Canon, Nikon, and Fujifilm. It was an interesting comparison to make as each lens had its own merits and specific strengths. It’s never easy writing this kind of review because I end up like all of them, which just isn’t very useful for readers!

The lenses in this group included the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art, the Canon RF35mm f/1.8 MACRO IS STM, Nikon Z 35mm f/1.8 S, and the Fujifilm XF33mm f/1.4 R LM WR. Spoiler alert: they are all great lenses, but only one could come out on top.

In the end, it was the Sigma that won. I gave it points for value and sharpness, as it really does excel at both of these. It’s possible to shoot some incredibly sharp images with this lens, despite it costing a fraction of some of its competitors. The interesting aspect of writing reviews for this magazine in particular, is that I look at each product from the perspective of a black and white photographer only. I examine contrast, texture, and tonality, which is a different experience from reviewing products for colour photography.

If you’re looking for a new prime lens for street photography, please do check out my review. I selected lenses that covered both DSLR and mirrorless mounts, so there should be one for everyone in there. Stay tuned for my next Head to Head feature in issue 305 of the magazine, coming soon!
